To re-power a John Deere 111 tractor, the following would apply: If your fuel tank is under the hood, you cannot use an engine with a recoil starter on it. The shortblocks have been discontinued. If the fuel tank is under the seat you could use any of the non-OHV engines listed here. You would also have to use your fuel pump and valve breather and notch a larger opening in the frame for the oil drain plug. If you have an electric clutch you will have to use the stator and regulator from your old engine.
You can use a non-OHV Briggs engine from 12-13.5hp on this tractor with the details above. The oil drain comes out at a slightly different angle, so you will have to enlarge the current oil drain pipe opening.
An OHV (Overhead Valve) engine will not work, due to the width of the engine and the muffler placement.

John Deere 316
Original Model: Onan
John Deere 316 - Kohler
The 317 tractors are bad for the driveshafts going out on them. When replacing the engine you need to evaluate the driveshaft. If there is any play in it at all, it will cause the main bearing of the engine to go out, which would not be covered under warranty. The driveshafts typically last 1000-1200 hours.
If you change or have previously changed the driveshaft you may have to cut about 3/4" off of the flywheel stub shaft that your drive shaft slides on.
John Deere 317-Onan

We do not have a kit for this tractor yet. This kit requires several other changes that the tractor with the Kohler does not have.

John Deere 510
Original Model: Kawasaki 14hp FC420V
This tractor used the Kawasaki FC420V engine which was a great engine, however John Deere did not have any foresight in the way that they used this engine. John Deere purchased these engines from Kawasaki without the oil pan, then they set the engine down on top of the transmission to direct drive it. Needless to say, no other model of engine will fit on this machine.
John Deere 524 Tiller
Original Model: Tecumseh 5HP H50-65392K.
The main shaft on the original engine is 3/4"x2-5/16". The PTO shaft is 5/8"x1" This engine has been discontinued and there is nothing else that will directly replace it. You may be able to us a 6hp Briggs Intek OHV engine, however the height of the PTO shaft is shorter and you would have to change your PTO belt or raise the engine up and use the same PTO belt and get a longer main belt for it. You would also have to change your PTO pulley to make this work.
John Deere 525
Original Model: Kawasaki 17hp FC540V.
John Deere purchased these engines from Kawasaki without the oil pan, then they set the engine down on top of the transmission to direct drive it. Needless to say, no other engine besides the FC540 will fit on this machine. The original Kawasaki FC540V engine is no longer available.

Two of the numbers that were used were Kohler KT17 24132 & K321S-60285 The KT17 engine and shortblock are no longer available. You can use a Kohler Magnum 18-20HP with a 1 1/8" x 3 25/32" shaft by changing a few things. The mounting holes will be the same The wiring will be a little different, but not difficult, the Magnum is Magneto Ignition and the KT is battery ignition The K341 engine has 1-1/4" pipe threads, the K321 had 1". You can use a pipe bushing You cannot change from a single cylinder to a twin cylinder without major changes.
John Deere 624 Tiller
Original Model: H60 Tecumseh
The original engine had a 3/4 x 2 1/4" main shaft and a second 5/8" pto shaft to run reverse. You may be able to use the Briggs engine listed with two shafts however you will probably have to buy a new belt and pulley because the shaft height for the second shaft will be lower than your current second shaft and the second shaft on the new engines is 1/2" diameter. Please note: If you buy an engine without the extra PTO shaft on it your reverse will not work.
John Deere 65
Original Model: TVM125 5hp Tecumseh.
There is no other brand that will fit in this mower, I am unsure of the shaft size on this one. If you have a 1" x 3 5/32" shaft you could possibly use the tvm140-70343. If you have a 7/8" x 3 5/32" shaft you could use our TVM125-783532 engine.

I have also been told that this unit came with a FH601V-AS32 with a 1 1/8ö x 4 3/8ö shaft You need to measure your shaft to verify that before buying anything. John Deere 757
Original Model: Kawasaki 25hp FH721D.
You need to find out your shaft size and whether you even use it before buying anything for it. If you buy the FH721D Kawasaki you will likely have to make some wiring changes to get this to work on this mower
If you buy the Kawasaki FH770D engine listed here are a couple of the changes that we know you will have to make to it:
1. The Flywheel side PTO shaft will have to be removed and use your current one
2. The new engine has a bendix starter on it without a solenoid, you can either add a separate solenoid (such as our Solenoid-1 below) or use your current starter.

John Deere 797 Z-Track
