Oil changes are an important part of lawn mower maintenance. A lawn mower engine has several moving parts that require lubrication to reduce heat and wear.
So when it is time for an oil change, you will come across three main types of oil for a lawn mower engine.
Here a few tips to help you out.
Most importantly, always refer to the engine manual for recommendations.
SAE30 Oil
SAE30 grade engine oil is the most commonly used in lawn mower engines. This oil has a
good viscosity level at room temperature, which means it can flow through the engine with
ease.
10W30 Synthetic Blend Oil
The 10W30 Synthetic blend oil is blended with mineral oil making it suitable for cold
weather conditions. It also has a good viscosity level at room temperature. 10W30 grade oil
come with built in detergents that prevent your engine becoming clogged with dirt and
debris.
The use of this oil may prolong the lifespan of your engine. If you live in a hot climate, it may
not be the most suitable choice.
10W40 Semi or Fully Synthetic Oil
This oil has a good viscosity level at room temperature and in colder temperatures.
Synthetic oils will last longer than a complete mineral based oil.
When Should You Change Your Engine Oil
We recommend changing your engine oil every 100 hours or so unless advised
otherwise in your manual.
If you notice any leakage.
If the oil smells bad.
If your mower is showing signs of wear or under performance.
